I love reading challenges! I think implementing reading challenges into summer reading for adults is a great idea. At my library, adult patrons fill out a form and submit it once they've read five books. It's definitely stale. But if patrons can read beyond their usual scope, I think it could add some flavor to summer reading.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun! We usually get about 8-10 prize packages put together for adults. We have the plastic bins (basically giant empty cheese ball containers lol) and put the descriptions on the front. Dinner and Movie, Dinner and a Play, Car care, summer fun basket, canoeing rentals, etc. Then for every book an adult reads, they get one entry form to place into a prize bucket to try to win. When they read off the reading challenge sheet, they get a bonus entry form. The adults really love the prizes and it keeps them coming in all summer!
DeleteI agree with your thoughts on passive RA. Newsletters can definitely accomplish this. Something similar we have at my library is the weekly Wowbrary "unveiling" of recently ordered books. A lot of people eagerly await this each week. It also gives them a chance to put their name on the holds list right away before too much of a line has formed for popular titles.
ReplyDeleteI love your summer reading challenge and have seen Bingo type challenges, but really liked how you came up with your different types of books. It also opens the communication lines when someone just can't find a blue book! I've been thinking a lot about summer reading for adults and how to tie it in with a children's program. I think modeling reading for children is one of the great things parents can do, so if everyone is sitting down and reading together it really helps everyone in the family. Fun ways, like your challenge could help make this fun for everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe adult summer reading challenge is awesome!! I was a huge fan of the summer reading programs as a kid, mostly because I got to win free books! :) The way you have it set up, it sounds like they are some really awesome prizes as incentives to keep people very interested.
ReplyDeleteI love that you included samples of your ideas in your prompt! Reading challenges are HUGELY popular and your other ideas are great as well. Full points and great job!
